The Silent Pulpit: Why the Church Cannot Ignore the Battle Over Abortion

Since Roe was overturned, pro-abortion legislation has won in every state. In Ohio, exit polls show that 1 in 4 evangelicals voted for the pro-abortion legislation. Some of them didn’t realize that’s how they voted because of the way the amendment was written. This November, ten states have proposed amendments to their state’s constitution that, if passed, will allow abortion up until birth and, in some States, remove common sense laws like requiring minors to get parental consent before getting an abortion.
Overturning Roe was a good thing, but for it to produce lasting good, people, especially Christians, need to be politically informed and vote against these amendments. We must love our neighbor. You can vote no on the amendments even if you can’t stomach a vote for either Presidential candidate. So go vote and encourage your pastor to address abortion.

Now is the time for the church to act and engage abortion through the lenses of Scripture, science, philosophy, and the Gospel, all with a spirit of compassion. The pulpit cannot remain silent on one of the most pressing moral issues of our time, an issue that directly impacts many within our congregations. If there is any place in society where people should expect to receive thoughtful, compassionate, and morally sound guidance, it is in our churches. Sadly, this doesn’t happen very often with abortion. And by remaining silent, we unintentionally send a message that the Christian worldview has no bearing on the real-world issues we face and that it is irrelevant. But that is not so. The Gospel shapes everything—how we view the world and how we are called to act in selfless love for the good of our neighbor (Luke 10:25-37).

To that end, we at Apologetics, Inc., in collaboration with Scott Klusendorf and the Life Training Institute, have produced six short videos designed to help churches across Florida clarify abortion and the proposed amendment and inspire their people to take action. Each video is only two minutes long, making them easy to incorporate into your services or small groups, whether you choose to show one or a different video each week leading up to the election.

We must act now, or the blood of the innocent will be on our hands. Share the videos below on social media and with pastors, encouraging them to show them to their congregations. The church must be informed—too many are unaware of what’s happening legislatively. We cannot face the day after the election and hear people ask, ‘Why didn’t we do anything? Why didn’t anyone tell me what was going on? How did we let this happen in our state?’

Let us be the ones who “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8).
